A fixed-term support role to bolster creative capabilities at AgResearch

Working as one of the Senior Designers at AgResearch, now part of the recently formed Bioeconomy Science Institute (BSI), a collection of four Crown Research Institutes. Quickly understanding focus research areas, scientific terminology, and the organisation’s communication style while navigating a merger offered huge room for growth while leaning on my experience to add value within the team and the wider organisation.

Working for an organisation closely aligned with my environmental and societal values was a big draw. As a bonus, exposure to Te Ao Māori and Te Reo through language courses, inclusion in documents I’ve produced, and understanding the importance of cultural expectations of me while photographing an event, such as a mihi whakatau to welcome Scion employees to the AgResearch Tuhiraki building in Lincoln, has been an excellent learning opportunity.

A typical week could involve photographing events such as the Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology, Dr. Shane Reti’s visit to launch one of the institute’s new laboratories, creating motion graphics to support new scientific research, developing a strategic plan with colleagues to merge the institute’s individual social media channels and retain audiences, workshopping and developing new BSI brand elements, creating brochureware for the commercialisation team to take overseas, and recording the BSI Chief Executive for media submission.
